to complement the ‘artist films at kino international’, we are showcasing artistic works in the FAHRBEREITSCHAFT exhibition space that either have a direct connection to film through stage props or to the technical conditions of filming. examples for this are the ‘chair leg’ object in markus schinwald’s film for the venice biennale, the mirror in the format of the film screen by morgan fischer, and daragh reeves’ cut-up dracula film. the works of isabell heimerdinger are also closely related to film – such as udo kier watching andy wahrhol’s dracula, starring udo kier himself. karthik pandian and mathias poledna, in turn, cut up a 35 mm film, treat the individual images (frames) as slides, and show them in extremely decelerated slow-motion sequences, so that only one image is presented a day. thus, one second of film is shown over 24 exhibition days. of course, there are also works that document chronological narratives – such as those by rodney graham, who rearranges the rooms of the brothers grimm, or telemistica, in which christian jankowski interviews a fortune teller on italian TV about the success of his most recent art work concerning exactly this question. beyond closed narratives, however, there are also many works that ask questions with inexplicable answers: what is the story behind danh vo’s enigmatic photos from vietnam of the 1970s? where did christopher williams’ photographic works of swiss water reservoirs end up? where do the books come from that carol bove has stacked up? what are donald evans’ stamps all about? and what happened to the chair frame that wade guyton worked on? indeed, there are interesting stories lurking behind these questions – to answer them, we must let the films run through our minds and, to watch them, we need both facts and fantasy. but not necessarily any hallucinogenic help, as in the construction of the rietveld chair by johannes wohnseifer.
